What would be the best way to finish my wood seats and wood gunnels. Should I rub paint on them than cover with spar varnish or just paint them or just varnish them. I would like them to have a color. Also would it be better to stain and varnish them. Thanks in advance for all your information

I steamed the 3/4 strips and bent them a little at a time and kept clamping as I went along. I did one strip at a time. as I got one fitted, I drilled the holes and put some 3/16 bolts in to hold it in place. After about a few days I did the same again with the next strip.

No I didn't have any way to groove the 3/4" oak. Besides the thickness of the metal is less than a 1/16" thick so that would not make much difference in the length of the rivets. I was not the one who took off all the wood and rivets but to my knowledge the original wood was not grooved either...
