    Bass fishing SoFlo

Last fall my GF moved into a villa in a gated community circled by a ~15' wide canal. I haven't been able to get out much, but I caught this one there in a couple of feet of water. Her son got a 5 pounder there a couple of months ago.

    "Unique" battery cooler

My setup is obviously not for boating but I have two (soon to be three) 80 Ah batteries being charged by over 450 watts of solar cells running my outdoor lighting, and water feature pumps. Since my batteries are in direct sunlight shaded only by a dense bush in a pot, I'm building a dual...

How many boats have oarlock mounts?

I know many or maybe even most 8'-12' tin boats have oarlock mounts, but do they at all LOA available? I ask because as far as I know the Coast guard still advises an oar or paddle as "auxillary propulsion" but realistically who would want one oar (or two for that matter) on a stranded boat?

    Tisas "Hi Power"

Recently I found out that a Turkish company "Tisas" was making a faithful copy of the Browning Hi Power. They got mostly rave reviews and given that they are the only stainless steel Hi Power ever made, I jumped on one... At less than $550 they're a steal. Cylinder and Slide uses the Tisas to...

    Vaping

My son just recently got a "non specific" pneumonia from vaping and very nearly lost his life. I thought he had a flu, but If not for a $15 pulse oximeter I have which showed his blood oxygen crashing and a drive to the ER and over two weeks in the hospital he pulled through. Three days after...

    Custom rod advice

My GF bought me a semi custom rod (the builder makes this model in advance not to order) for Christmas and it's not at all what I can use. It's 6'10". But the problem I have is 6' is my max usable length as my fishing bike (overhanging tree clearance) truck cab, and topper length can handle 6'...

    Securing decorative stones

Over 11 years ago I built a firepit on my patio to enclose / protect a chiminea from winter winds. After a couple of seasons the all steel chiminea rusted out. It's been nearly 10 years with my current firepit and it has had hundreds of fires lit in it, several dozen each winter season, and...

    solar landscape lighting

I am just finishing a home solar based landscape and water feature project. It's cool coming home at any hour and the whole perimeter of my house and back yard are lit and fountains are running. The builders of my house were stingy with exterior AC outlets which necessitated i go big hammer...

Taking the good with the bad

I ALWAYS have my fishing vest on, ALWAYS. Why? I have lures, a line clipper, my Boga grip, pliers, sun and reading glasses, spare lures and hooks in it. Sort of a mobile tackle shop. This memorial day was one day I did not. We went to my GF's lake just behind her house with a few dozen shiners...

    Bicycle fishing

I've found a number of places inaccessible by car to hand launch my 10' tinny and are only available by horse, walking or bicycle, no motorized vehicles. I have no horse, don't want to walk, and have a few bikes. I'm rigging my trail bike with a rod holder, and I'm wondering if anyone else is...

    Maybe bowfishing

Back in the day, I shot bow at a club with a very old PSE 30% let off compound. The club was kicked off the property and we never found a new spot to shoot and compete in. I stopped bow shooting some 30 odd years ago. Fast forward to yesterday, I saw the svelte used compound on the wall of a...

    Mixed bag today

It was a weird day, several in the boat. Nothing seemed to turn the fish on going from one lure to the next, even the peacocks were fussy, you gotta love those peacocks though.

    Slow day...

We went out today, despite the morning starting off weird with a C-R-A-Z-Y lady taking pix of us while we were staging the boat telling us we were trespassing in a public park, AND calling the police, we had mediocre results. Two ~1.5 lb LMB in the boat, one over 2, and a small snakehead. The...

    Elco electric motors

In another thread I mentioned Elco electric motors as I have been seriously thinking about getting one. The Torqueedo 5 HP equivalent motor is ~$3,900 (plus $3k for their battery?) while the Elco is ~$2,600 (boater supplied battery bank), both are plus shipping and taxes if applicable. A fishing...

    Quiet at home

For my own reasons, I keep a home land line, but robocallers have become way too annoying lately. A few days ago I received yet ANOTHER call from some "credit card" company who I had asked politely to remove my phone number from their contact list in the past. This call was different, the...

    Noco Genius Gen3 (12A)

I've been using a 2 bank Deltran "Battery Tender" brand in my boat since I first ran all electric. It had a few issues for my purposes, it's only two banks and I have three batteries, its charge rate is very low (1.25A per bank), and it's not waterproof. I like it a lot, but keeping the third...

    Cutting the cable

It's been 11 years since I pulled the plug on cable. Their intrusive advertising (remember their sales pitch "Sure you PAY us but we do not have commercials?") made paying for cable just stupid, and I've never looked back. My last 360 degree UHF antenna (Radio Shack ~$60) was 11 years old...
