I have a 50 hp ELTPO merc that has been cold natured since ownership. Bought used on Craig's list ten years ago.

Besides being hard to start and smoking like Cheech martin, it has been very reliable purchase after warming up. Even the next day would start with normal smoking.

Attempted to fish last thanksgiving and found toasted wires that connect to the volt regulator to the stator.

Dropped $900.00 on new stator, volt regulator, cdm's, and plugs.

Started to run today but only with constant pressing of the fuel enrichment (choke) and usual copious amounts of smoke.

Is a carb overhaul next I think.

Please comment.

Thanks firefly.

Not a difficult job and if done thoroughly you should see a better starting engine. Richen your idle mixture a bit to aid in starting and you may not have to use as much choke to keep it running. Make sure your thermostat is operable as well. Helps idle quality.
