    need advice

Having run a 9.9 for a while I think it will be way too small for a 1548 with three people and gear in the boat. It would be good for trolling in a small lake with two people and limited gear (providing the wind does not pick up.) Otherwise go for a 25-40 depending on the hull rating. I use...

    9.9 evinrude

Man, that doesn't happen everyday. Check out the Tohatsu/Nissan 4 strokes and save yourself $500.

    9.9 evinrude

You should try something simple like opening up the low speed needle valve a few turns. The blockage might be right there. It can be done from the front of the motor. If you do and it works, you will have to screw it back in to let the engine idle properly: screw it all the way until it stops...

A question of speed and power

A 12 by 42 weighs about 200 lbs. With a 5.5 you get about 6mph, with a 9.9 you can get 18 if you can keep the bow in the water.

    1976 Johnson 9.9 Seahorse

You should try checking the fuel supply. pump the bulb with the hose removed from the motor. You will have the push on the ball at the end of the hose, but fuel should flow freely here. Second you can remove the fuel pump cover. There is a screen in there that can plug off. Pump the bulb...

18hp or 25hp, which to choose??

Interesting that it appears to have a short-shaft transom as the newer Lowes are long shaft in this size. You want to make sure you get a short shaft 25 for it, otherwise you sacrifice all the power advantage. Actually, do the safe thing and measure the exact transom height then match the motor.

Need specs for johnson O/B 15 hp

You need to know what size the bolts are. OMC used a torque spec based on fastener size (as most of us do in the industry): 1/4" 5-7 ft-lb 5/16" 10-12 ft-lb 3/8" 15-22 ft-lb 7/16" 28-30 ft-lb The only exception to this was the through bolts on the starter.

    93 Johnson 15 hp

I'm pretty sure short shafts with electric start were pretty rare (I've never seen one.) He might want to take a second look under the hood before spending top dollar like that. It's a pretty good bet the thing has been built up. Also he should keep in mind he could get a new Tohatsu...

    used 9.9

The "c" at the end means it was made in the third production run that year, probably towards the middle of 98. Mine ends with an "e", indicating it was made towards the end of the year. Either way, $400 is a pretty good deal if it has compression. Even if you have to address the water pump...

:D All is right with the world now that my 9.9 is starting again! I received the starter I won on eBay last night and it bolted right up. Thanks again to Tinboat.net!! :P

    Lower unit repair

I did a very similar repair on a cavitation plate that had a chunk missing. I used a piece of sheet aluminum with the JB Weld. Because the cavitation plate is flat, this repair is easy.

    Recoil Starter Question

Someone stole the recoil starter out of my 1980 9.9 Johnson  Can anyone recommend a place on the web where I can get a used starter from a parted-oput motor? I hate to buy a new one as they are $155 from iboat Thanks

A question of speed and power

I have a 5.5hp on my 12 foot boat and it will reach 5.8mph for me solo, 5.5 with two people and 5.3 with three people. I recommend you go for the 9.8 Nissan or Tohatsu. I have a 9.9 Johnson and on the 12' boat it will do 16mph.
