reverse, prop climbs out of water

Not too familiar with the older mercury's, I do have an older Evinrude 5.5 hp that has a lever you flip. Having it unlocked allows it to pop up if you hit something.

Top or side mount controls?

I had a boat that started as a bare hull and my dealer added a center console. I let him choose where the motor control was mounted. Because my console isn’t very wide, it looks like the side mount was the only choice.
Sorry for the hijack, are those snap on covers custom made?

Top or side mount controls?

I would go with a side mount. To me, having a little more distance seems more balanced. Especially when you're in a situation where you might want one hand on the steering wheel and one on the throttle.

Kind of like driving a car with a four speed.

Oar storage in a small boat?

If you think you'll actually use them, maybe store them in the oar locks. Out of the way and still ready to use.

I just carry one extra long oar for pushing and maneuvering in the right conditions.

No problem. Just surprised I'm getting grief for a situation I thought I handled well. Here is the actual spot on the river. You can't see around the first sand bar. I ALWAYS keep one hand on the steering knob and one on the throttle. The first shoal is ankle deep then a short section of 2-3 foot wa...

It is wise to be nice to the kayakers. Could be a DNR guy, he might wait for you at the boar ramp under the wrong conditions . . . I did the nicest thing I could have done. I know most everybody on that river. At :09 that's David waiving at me. He kayaks that river nearly year around. If I had shut...

Maybe you don't leave much of a wake when on plane but I always slow to a crawl when passing a kayak or canoe (0:18s) In NH that would get you a $270 performance award if caught. Headway speed within 150' of a person, vessel or land. The river is not even 150' wide. Not sure what that has to do wit...

Interesting new stomp grate for outboard jets. This one has a remote lever. The only other outboard stomp grate I've seen, you still had a lever on the motor.

Etec G2 Jets are Finally Ready to Go!

WOW over 600 lb-ft of torqe. I'm loving the power and efficiency of new high tech engines. Vehicles too. The problem comes when they develop a problem even the dealers have a problem figuring out. My mercury was in the shop three time before they replaced the ECM. I finally found a bolt that had wor...

98 johnson 50 hp spl any good

If I am not mistaken the motor weighs around 190#. That boat is rated for a 30HP motor. His boat, he can do as he pleases. As far as the motor they were good motors, but I'll promise you on a jet it will be loud and a fuel hog, count on that. I don't disagree with you too much. The Yamaha 40 hp is ...
