What oil to use in a lower unit?

In my Mercury motors that I bought new I use mercury oils.. in everything else, I use generic 90wt marine oil from canadian tire. ( I know you can't get that in the U.S.) So using any type of Marine gear oil from a reputable brand should be ok..

And in regards to the electric starter.. spray some lube on the shaft above the gear on the starter motor ( there will probably be a spring there) and check all the electrical connections for anything loose or corroded.

Yeah your on point with what you need to do before the initial start up.. except the octane.. try and find high octane with no ethanol. After that initial service it should be a good motor.

Re: 88 Tracker TXS 17 rebuild

There is a small dent in the gunwale cap and I,m not sure how to repair it. Any suggestions? https://i.ibb.co/NrXDCqg/IMG-1349.jpg https://i.ibb.co/gmt6xFT/IMG-1350.jpg What I would try in that situation is take a slide hammer from the top, while squeezing the sides with a C-clamp.. while warming i...

Re: Battery in the front, slow cranking...

Definitely a bad connection somewhere. My best guess is the battery switch is possibly carboned up from an arc, or a bad ground from the buss bar. I would try and take the buss bar out of the circuit and run the negative cable from the motor direct to the battery, then run the buss bar parallel to g...

Re: Gamefisher 9.9 Any Good?

Gamefisher was a line of motors marketed by Sears.. they are extremely hard to find parts for.. considering it's over 40 years old, your probably better off Investing your time and money into a mercury, evinrude, Honda, yamaha or Suzuki... at least they still have an active dealer network. Re: Evinrude 30hp, another poor decision?

Against my better judgement, I took the motor out to the barge without thorough testing on the engine stand. In the water it fired up easily and had a little trouble with the idle. Then after a few revs it started to back fire every 20ish seconds. It would make a pssst sound, shudder and then smoot...

Re: Evinrude 30hp, another poor decision?

Look like you ended up getting a good deal.. around here ( ontario canada) that motor would be double that price in running condition.

Re: Evinrude 30hp, another poor decision?

I would replace the impeller first off if you can get the motor to fire up.. then save up for a new prop. Sent from my SM-G960W using Tapatalk While one can't argue that replacing a water pump is always a good idea, I did not heed your advice and it was no problem in my case. Thank for the imput! Y...

Re: Compression low?

I'd pull the head an investigate.. might just be a head gasket.. if the cylinder looks good, I'd put a new head gasket and run it.. but before doing that I'd go over all 3 carbs, the center one might be running lean.
It's on the borderline of being concerned

Another thought is the thermostat.. it will be hard to tune properly if the engine temp is not consistent.
