Lowrance Hook Reveal vs. Garmin Striker VIVID 7sv vs. Humminbird Helix?

The GT 56 transducer is the newer transducer and from some of the UTube comparisons I have seen (56 vs 54), there is definitely some improvement. Is it worth the extra money? Up to you to say; they are not giving those transducers away. I would suggest after you used yours for a bit, to check...

Lowrance Hook Reveal vs. Garmin Striker VIVID 7sv vs. Humminbird Helix?

I’d add the Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 73sv Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo’s to your list to consider. Lots of places are closing them out for relatively short money. They have what you want: GPS, side view, 7” screen plus come pre-loaded with U.S. lakes. I have the previous model to this (the Plus...

Plugs on a 2 stroke when idling alot?

I do extended trolling for stocked trout in my 35 HP Johnson and my OMC engine manual lists using a colder plug when extended trolling. No issues whatsoever and purrs like a kitten...

    MotorGuide VariMAX issues

Sorry to necropost (i.e., bring back a thread from the dead) but this old thread just saved me $210. Instead of buying a new head unit (appears MotorGuide offers no separate parts), I found the magnet ring had slipped off, re-superglued it and away it works again.

    older minn kota troll motor

I had one one of those motors. It was great; but unfortunately parts are getting scarce. Good luck in your quest.

Does the outboard get in the way of sidescan?

Not for my Garmin 73SV. Instructions do say to mount at least a foot from the down turning side on the prop (I.e., if the prop turns to the right, make sure the transducer is to the right, at least 12” away, from the prop). It is pretty amazing; it’s almost like a TV under water.

2 stroke boat gas in a weed eater.

Generally, it is NOT recommended to use low ash TCW oils (W = water cooled) in air cooled engines, unless the oil is specifically rated for use in both water and air cooled engines (a few oils are). Air cooled engines run hotter and at higher RPMs, hence the specification for a different oil...

    Need some ideas! Trout/salmon

Iceman, I troll for trout a lot in the Spring and Fall in MA and use a combination of leadcore and downriggers. We do real well on leadcore and only rarely have to use the downriggers, as we don't trout fish in the Summer as we're too busy with the stripers, blues & tuna. This is all for...

1980-1983 Johnson seahorse 7.5 HP Prop Question

It could be the angle of the photo, but I suspect your concern is warranted. A quick test is to take off prop and on flat ground using a level, check blade tip to tip all are equal level. Then measure from ground up to each blade tip that all are equal. There could be other issues we can't see...

Minn Kota Endura Max vs Endura C2

I've owned both and the Digital Maximizer outperforms the non-DM by a wide margin (5x? Not sure but IMO definitely 3-4x).

Transducer causing rooster tail behind boat

Could be a number of issues without seeing your setup. However, 2 of the more common are: 1) the transducer is mounted too deep. Typically it should be about even with the hull. If it is, trying tilting the front of the transducer slightly up or down; and, 2) the gap between the transducer and...

    Idle quality and general performance

You may want to get a copy of that engine's Service manual on Ebay. They're relatively cheap and tell you how to set up the carbs, linkages, etc, etc. You may also want to do a search on Pappy; per his bio he spent 4 years in OMC (Johnson /Evinrude) Engineering and 22 more as a Johnson/Evinrude...

How long does Non Ethanol Fuel last?

Up here in the Northeast, we pull our boats out for the winter in October and the ethanol fuel has been fine when we re-launched in May of the following year. Of course, we did stabilize the gas (Stabil, etc) and we've had no issues.

    35 horse Evinrude any ideas?

Just found this page for .pdf on-line engine manuals. Wish I had found it before as Price sure beats what I paid off eBay for the hard copy manual. They have a whole bunch of other outboard manuals as well that might help others. If this is spam, you can remove but again I wish I knew about this...

Didn't use marine grease on my bearings. Uhoh?

Check the rating on the grease container to see if your grease packaging displays a code such as NLGI GC-LB. The National Lubrication Grease Institute (NLGI) certifies grease to meet different performance levels in both the wheel bearing grease category (NLGI GC being the highest level), and in...

    I need advice.

As above said, best to consult the manual. My Honda 2 hp 4 stroke manual says one can store it either vertically or horizontally. The engine comes with molded foot pads on one side so one stores horizontally on that side only. Manual says if for any length of time, let engine stay vertical for a...

anyone ever raised the sides of a v-hull?

I know a guy that took a sheet of 1/4" plywood and ripped it lengthwise to add gunnel height to his 14' for sea ducking. He thru bolted each side so he could take it off in the summer. He used 1/4" so it would bend and to not add too much weight in the bow, throwing off hull stability. It seemed...

    Adding grease to Bearing Buddy

The hole is an overfill/pressure relief vent so you don't overfill and blow out the rear seal.

    Adding grease to Bearing Buddy

As lckstckn2smknbrls mentioned above, the best rule of thumb is don't mix the greases. Mixing different types of grease can cause the bearing to fail; in reality, its the grease that fails. Example-mixing a sodium based wheel bearing grease with a lithium based wheel bearing grease will cause...
