I have the 1988 Johnson version, twin cylinder, it has the spot for the gas tank to mount on the rear. Only has forward and neutral. It actually planes a 12' aluminum with just me and the gas tank up forward.

Thanks for the information Fordman, I believe I have this one running as good as it can be expected. It has the recommended Champion plugs. and is pushing a 12' V aluminum to 24-25 MPH with just me.

The fuel pump can leak fuel into the crankcase if diaphragm is ruptured, might check that.

What oil did you use? the penzoil semi-synthetic I use burns very clean-little smoke for old two strokes.

Make sure throttle is wide open. years ago we got a new to us 25hp, 1st few times out I thought it was slower than our old one, found out the twist grip went to a point then got harder to turn. Going past that was wide open, and fast!

I just pulled the powerhead on my Johnson 15 for the 1st time, as they said, not that difficult, I replaced the gasket, grommet, and a seal at the bottom of the exhaust tube and it went back together fine.

Hello, I have two Johnson outboards that have the push style kill switch, has anyone converted these to the newer style lanyard safety switch?

They didn't last as long around here in the salt water, they are non-permeable though! I think I've come to like the plastic for how easy they are on the boat. Some friends use them for display purposes or on the motor stand.
