    Best Method of Sanding Aluminum?

I used aircraft stripper. Your mask will come in handy there also. Shade helps give it time to activate and peel the layers of paint. Some paint residue will still require scraping, but most of the paint will come off during the rinse. Good ventilation, cool temps, keep it off of you and your...

Project swamp boat: Lowe rover 16

Looks great, I bet the tackle box shelf will be one of the those little details you appreciate every time you use it. What kind of paint are you going with?

Project swamp boat: Lowe rover 16

Looks great! Subscribed! I’m doing an aluminum rebuild also but riveting instead of welding. I’m using thinner material, (.063 6061 square tube for framing and .100 5052 sheet for decks, hull is .080), I’m a decent mig welder with mild steel but I didn’t want to subject the boat to my learning...

What's a good material for deck templates?

That’s exactly the situation I’m in, luckily. The boat has stiffening ribs about 3-4’ apart that span the bottom of the hull. I can use those and it will float the material 13” down from the gunnel edge for the entire length of the boat. I’ll just need to lean over from the outside and make my...

What's a good material for deck templates?

Ahhh, I get most of the concept from that pic, thanks! I was going to use tri-square in a similar manner to transfer the arc to the template. I will google it before I do, I don’t understand why he wouldn’t leave the ticking stick at the same angle all the way down the curve and plot the curve...

What's a good material for deck templates?

I found some "Thrifty White" wall board at Lowes, $14.50 for a 4x8 sheet. I can glue/tape 2 of those together to get the floor template built and then reuse one for the casting deck. Found it searching for "door skins", so thanks LDUBS! The floor is just over 48" wide, the material specs at...

Thanks for all the replies from everyone. LDUBS, tell me more about door skins and the tick stick method please.

What's a good material for deck templates?

I will be installing a false floor, casting deck and bulwarks for dry storage/foam in my jon boat soon. I would really really like to do it right the first time because aluminum is spendy and my OCD won't let me live with gross mistakes. :LOL2: What's a good, cheap material to use for templates...

    De-pro'ing a Tracker

Really glad I saw this thread, you have done some very high quality work! I will be installing an aluminum false floor and casting deck on 14' semi-V jon boat soon and was needing some inspiration. I was planning to use a similar method for the bends in the sheet, it was good to see now well...

Anyone using Valspar Anti-Rust Armor paint?

Found a bit about Rustoleum there, but not the Valspar paint. Anybody?

Anyone using Valspar Anti-Rust Armor paint?

I found this at Lowe’s today, it’s an oil based enamel that is tintable. I was there to check out the Rustoleum Topside marine paint(oil based enamel), but it’s not tintable. The staff recommended the Valspar as an alternative. Looking to hear from someone who has experience with either of these...

    Drain plug hole

Thanks for the tip on the Moeller drain. Will it work if your transom is just a skin of aluminum on the lower section where the drain goes? i.e.-Can you trim the tube length down to work or is it made to use on transoms that are wood backed? My transom is 15" height but only the upper 9" is wood...

Best way to seal riveted seams?

I figured I better get started on the paint stripping before I talked myself out of it. I’m taking the whole boat down to bare metal. Got the aft side of the transom and the transom trim pieces done this evening. Also pulled two of the three benches. Will pull the last bench and start stripping...

Best way to seal riveted seams?

After reading the hassles of stripping the entire hull down to bare aluminum, I’m hesitant to commit. Aircraft stripper is harsh on skin, lungs and expensive, Citri-Strip is a lot less effective, the process is painful to ponder on a Monday morning. :) I may just hit the surfaces with a scotch...

Best way to seal riveted seams?

What kind of material do you think is in the seam this old, rubber? Will aircraft stripper damage the rubber? I was wanting to use it to strip the hull. The seams aren’t even folded, just lapped and riveted. I’m pretty sure the stripper would get to it if there’s any material in there.

Best way to seal riveted seams?

Ok, thanks for the input, good to know about that option and glad it worked for you. I’m thinking inside seam because I will do a false floor with a forward raised deck that will hide the seam. Is it better to seal from the outside? Sealing the outside seam does have water pressure to assist in...

Best way to seal riveted seams?

Took my new to me 1950s Lone Star Corsair out for a leak test with my 8 year old son yesterday. Went great! First time in the boat, paddled around for about an hour and a half. Only had maybe 1/4 to 1/2 cup of water come in. Very stable also, able to stand easily on all the benches, decks should...
