Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

You have to buy a new 4 Stoke to get one since apparently they didn't know they were doing it. The one I have has to go back to the dealer. It was a warranty part and require it back. The Cut impeller looks just like mine but instead of being ground it looks like they casted a new mold...

Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

The year of the motor should not matter however, did you ever take the impeller out? If you did you would clearly notice the top end of had some shiny grind marks where metal was ground off. It's something you would not be able to miss. Here are pics of each. the shiny one is the right one for...

Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

The issue with your first motor was most likely the impeller. The impeller on mine from the factory was as I thought an uncut 60HP 2 stroke impeller. Mercury backcuts the 4 stroke version to get more RPM's out of the motor. Your speed is dead on what mine is as an average. I get between 5200 and...

Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

I'm pretty positive that Mercury is going to want this one back. I'll see what happens. It's a brand new boat/motor and this would be Warranty.

Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

Interesting you say that. I spoke to the third person at Mercury and explained I needed to talk to someone very familiar with that motor. This person agreed that the RPM's were low, and talked to a product specialist who also agreed they were low. His fix was to order a new Merc Impeller, that...

Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

Manual says 5500-6000, Outboard Jets says 5300+, Mercury is still trying to figure out what it's supposed to be. The dealer told me they ran an identical boat to mine at 4850 RPM's with a top speed of 27 which is right about what I am getting. The motor produces top HP at 5k, I don't see why...

    Lowe Shallow Water Series Boats?

I've got one, just bought it. Super stable boat. The only difference in the Shallow Water series according to Lowe is no floor and no paint. My boat is a Big River series with a Perf floor (and no paint. I'm starting to really regret the 60/40 Jet, but it's new I'm still tweaking, which with all...

    Reverse gate adjustment

How old are your cables? Got them in a tight bend? My brand new rig was super hard to shift, I had to cut a few zip ties to allow the cable some freedom. You can also try a little lube on the roller, but it's not going to last very long.

Mercury 60/40 4 Stroke 4800 RPM WOT right?

I've got a Lowe 1655 with a 60/40 Jet. I'm showing a WOT of 4800 on the tach which seems on the low side. I'm getting around 24-26 MPH which also seems a bit low. River was way up and moving fast last weekend and I got it up to 28.5 downstream, but still never turned more than 4800. Does this...

    Old Boat Repair- Stress Cracks

I would have a plate made for the transom that went all the way across, you can rivet or weld it in several locations. That will also straighten it up. The sides I would just have rewelded. It looks to me that the rotten transom was the cause of all of it. A bouncing motor can wreak havoc on a...

    My 1986 Yazoo Project

I removed the paint with Klean-Strip Aircraft remover, a putty knife and a pressure washer. The boat was then sanded with a Red Scotch brite, Then Grey, then buffed. The main reason for disassembly was the crap that was in it from sitting for seven years as well as it was full of spiders and...

    Johnson 70hp dies in reverse.

Does it shut off or die? I am assuming it's not a tiller. Could it be a short in the control box (if it is shutting down and not stalling)? The throttle linkages work the same way in forward and reverse, so reverse should not make any difference. Also check the wiring on the motor around the...

Good idea or waste of time?

If you want it to last use Marine Ply and waterproof it with Epoxy, or Spar Urethane. I thought about using Regular ply until I saw how many voids are in it, those can hold and trap water causing it to rot from the inside out.

    My 1986 Yazoo Project

I bought this tin as a second boat to fish places I dare to take my Xpress. As usual I can't leave well enough alone. It's an ongoing project and I will update as I go along. One of the previous owners painted the entire boat (didn't miss anything) Green. I'm not a big fan of green...

    Stress Cracks

What I am planning is to cut a piece of aluminum that will fit between the chines that goes a few inches forward of the crack and also will attach to the rib in front of the knee brace via solid rivets, I will then use a glue or sealant to waterproof it. I'm hoping that will stop the cracking (I...

    Just gettin started

Klean-Strip Aircraft Paint Remover is the best thing I have found. Put on, let bubble then scrape off (i used a Stainless thin putty knife), wash rinse repeat. I found that a pressure washer really speeds this up, but beware that it WILL strip paint from anything it lands on (car, garage door etc).

    Stress Cracks

I'm not sure that stuff will bond a crack in this location. I've got some of it, and last time I used it it warped the crap out of the aluminum. I was able to take a punch and knock it right back out of the hole, it didn't bond very well at all. If I apply heat I'd go with welding. Not sure how...

    Stress Cracks

My issue is (and it may not be an issue) these are the front mount holes (closest to the bow) for the knee braces. There is nothing in front to add support unless I add a piece like i was mentioning before under the hull and rivet further up, not sure any glue product is going to stand much of a...

    Stress Cracks

I am working to restore a 1986 Yazoo 1542. When removing the transom I noticed that a couple of the rivet holes in the hull of the boat have stress cracks. I'm trying to figure out the best way to fix these. I've thought about drilling a hole at the end of each crack, grinding a cut in the crack...
