9.9 Merc low RPM AT WOT

I checked the prop again for numbers, I found: A12 L 9P I called a local merc dealer and he said the L 9P is a 9 pitch. So changing the prop would be a waist of $$$$$. I'll find a used 20 or 25 and that should fix me up. Thanks Tony

OK, an increase would be fine. I'll look around for the best price. Thanks Tony

9.9 Merc low RPM AT WOT

Thanks. What will that do to my top end speed? If it's going to drop it, I'll just sell this motor and buy a 20 or 25 HP. I fish the bigger lakes and 11 mph is too slow for me. It takes too long to get anywhere. Tony

9.9 Merc low RPM AT WOT

yes, the anti-cab plate is where it should be. I removed the prop and its a 12 pitch. Not sure how the pitch works, I'll research it. The manual says 5000-6000 RPM is the target zone for WOT. Your 9.5 is probably 80's or older and the HP for them was measured at the flywheel, after that the HP...

9.9 Merc low RPM AT WOT

I have a 92 9.9 Merc short shaft on a 1448 alum jon, no bulky decks or anything that added excessive weight. Just normal gear. With 2 180 lb adults I can only get 4300 RPM, I can't remember the RPM with just me but it is between 4.4 & 4.7K. The manual says normal WOT RPM is 5000-6000. I have the...

    tow vehicle info

Tim- with the weight on the rear of the vehicle, that transfers the weight OFF the front and that will cause a loss of traction. I have read where some guys have had to call a wrecker to get them off the ramp. Thats why I want AWD. I realize I could buy a blazer or something similar but I...

    tow vehicle info

I now have a 96 GMC PU w/250k+ and it's started to nickel and dime me to death. It's time for something new! I know FWD vehicles are bad especially on ramps, but anyone have experience with Honda CRV AWD or something similar? The Honda will tow 1500# and I assume the other brands are similar...

    battery charger info

OK, thanks. I was afraid of that. Plan B... small trickle type charger. I don't frequent electric only lakes that often, so hopefully a small charger will work. I really don't want to sell my dual and buy a triple charger, too much $$$$$. Tony

    battery charger info

I have a dual charger in my boat now and USUALLY just have 2 batteries (deep cycle and starting). However, when going to electric only lakes, I remove the front mounted gas tank and replace it w/another deep cycle. My question: will my current configuration charge the 2nd deep cycle connected in...

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

Fixed it.. :? As I stated earlier, I have never owned an outboard. With that in mind, the first nut came off easily and was the smaller of the 2. The next nut, or so I thought, was a spacer shaped like a nut. I tried to remove it with a socket, but it is splined... It along with the...

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

Yep, it has 2 different sized nuts. I removed the smaller outside nut, the main 13/16" nut will not budge! I soaked it w/BP Blaster and will try tomorrow... Tony

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

Bobg, I have the service manual (PDF). It shows a "spacer" and "prop nut" BOTH are HEX shaped! That may be the problem. After my coffee kicks in I'll check and post my reply. Tony

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

lckstckn2smknbrls, If you mean like a double nut, I'll check for that. This is my first OB motor so some of the safety features will be new to me. Tony

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

Thanks for the ideas. I will keep applying the BP Blaster for a few more days then heat the nut and try again.

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

No cotter pin that I can see, user manual does not mention one. It says to remove nut counter clock wise.

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

crazymanme2, Mine is not plastic so maybe a little heat might work. From the looks of the nut, the prop has never been off.

    Merc 9.9 prop removal

I bought a '92 Merc 9.9 that has been hardly used. I have it in good shape for this season, but when I tried to remove the prop to grease the shaft, the nut won't budge. I have sprayed BP Blaster for the last 4 days. When I put the piece of wood between the anticave plate and the prop there is...

    20HP vs 25HP

even better, I also bought a 1448 jon.

    20HP vs 25HP

thanks _99, That makes me feel better buying the '92 merc 9.9. I'm 180# and my fishing bud is near the same. I opted for the 9.9 because there are more restricted lakes that I will fish than the large unrestricted lakes. Two of the large lakes have idle or 5mph areas away from the ski areas. If...

    thermostat

I have the service and owners manuals, neither says when to replace it. The service manual did describe how to check it with hot water and a string inserted into the t-stat. I would rather spend $20 for a new one than take the time to test it and replace the gaskets. This motor is new to me so...
