    Filling old drill holes?

As I recall, even the JB Marine is iron based.

    Filling old drill holes?

West Systems does have some nice epoxy. I used quite a bit of it when laying up wings back when I could see well enough to fly RC planes. One thing that a guy learns real quick in that hobby is the use of epoxy fillers. Microballons, chopped fiberglass, carbon fiber and even balsa saw dust...

    Filling old drill holes?

Perhaps JB Weld no longer lists the filler material on the packages. They did a year ago. Hope I didn’t start this urban legend. If so, country folklore would be a better description. :) There is no urban in this old boy.

    Filling old drill holes?

JB Weld does bond surprising well.

    Filling old drill holes?

Of these three products I’d choose the last one, Marine Tex. Fuzzygrub’s idea of bucking rivets might be the best bet though.

    Filling old drill holes?

Don’t know, I was not testing this stuff in a controlled experiment. Perhaps it isn’t rusting because the filler is suspended in epoxy? The aluminum alloy could also have some influence. All that I can tell you is a year ago when I was considering JB Weld products to fix some holes in...

    Filling old drill holes?

Any JB Weld that I’ve seen has an iron based filler material. It could corrode the aluminum over time. If a guy could find a similar product with aluminum filler, it would probably be fine.

    What is this boat?

Well, I hope for GLF that this isn’t an issue.

    What is this boat?

Sounds like a great idea in an old ad. This may have actually been one of the first composite materials used in a personal boat. The only catch that I can see is if the foam is saturated with water. How do you fix it?

    Filling old drill holes?

Do you have a buddy with an aluminum capable MIG? They are fairly common these days. I guy could stick chewing gum in the holes if he wants to be cheap. Just don’t use JB Weld, it might look like aluminum but, it’s iron based.

    Filling old drill holes?

Common problem with used boats. Holes everywhere. If the aluminum is in good shape the holes could probably be TIG welded and sanded smooth.

    What is this boat?

Good luck. I wasn’t just being sarcastic, that came from the heart. I manage to spend a crap ton of money even on small boat projects. You know what BOAT stands for? Just Bring On Another Thousand. :)

    Post Eclipse Season Start

Think I’ll take a mental health day too. It’s been cool and windy with just enough showers to spoil your day on water. Supposed to be nice today, worked late last night to clear the desk of tasks. Last time out I caught ten rainbow in a couple of hours. All catch and release. Nothing...

What is this boat? Looks like a money pit to me. Hope you have a huge budget.

Do I really "need" a casting deck?

Ray has some good points. Also, keep stability in mind since a 1236 is fairly short and narrow. If you do any kind of deck, keep it as low as possible. I had a 1240 Jon a couple of years ago. Cut some notches in a piece of plywood, added some closed cell foam between the ribs and it worked...

Transom replacement, curved to straight question

You could go with rectangular tube or architectural channel which has flat sides and squared inside corners. Structural channel has tapered inside walls for strength but, it may not fit well as a cap. Similar to rectangular tubing, uneven legs are available. For example, 1.5” wide with 1” legs...

    Tin Walleye set ups

I’m still debating getting downriggers for the NR Mariner. Know that I’ll need them if I ever want to fish the mouth of the Columbia for Salmon. When fishing the upper Columbia for Walleye it’s appears optional.

    Tin Walleye set ups

When trolling, I usually long line for trout. The fly is typically 100’ or more behind the boat. This time of year when the water is cold and the fish are actively feeding throughout the water column, the long line techniques aren’t necessary. In my experience it’s more of a depth thing than...

Is the motor height going to be an issue?

    Your boat looks good!

Is the motor height going to be an issue?

If you are getting 20 mph with a 9.9 it’s probably Ok. Any idea what RPMs it was running at WOT? Jackplate manufacturers claim that moving the motor back will get the prop in cleaner (less turbulent) water and increase performance. There is probably some truth to that statement. The only...
