Alumacraft transom question (2011 1542 model)

Traditionally most boats have wood core transoms. The small piece on the outside you are referring too is is simply there so when you clamp an outboard motor it gives some tooth while protecting the back of the transom. It is made to be sacrificed and requires replacement every few years. If...

    help identifying this boat

That should make a fine fishing boat. Perfect for what you want to do. I do not own one but I suspect a skiff like that is a work boat. As you load her the more stable she becomes. I would not try to overload her on purpose but due to the flared sides the lower the boat sits the more stable...

    help identifying this boat

No clue in who made it but I can identify the type. It's not a V or John type boat, it's a type of Aluminum Skiff. Wood skiffs of that type are pretty common. If it does not have the 12 digit Coast Guard # stamped somewhere on the hull, then it's pre-1972.

    aluminum boat paint

A gallon should be plenty. If you are brush painting it should be more than enough and you should have some left over if you are spraying. If you are doing different colors, I might consider getting quarts especially if you are brush painting. They do make "metal" based plastic body fillers...

    aluminum boat paint

OK, Now here is something for you to think about. Enamels can be sensitive to the paint it is going over. If they are not compatible it may craze. We painted the back door of the fire station years ago and it wrinkled up like leather. People wanted to know where we got that custom door LOL...

    navigation lighting ???

First off headlights are useless for a boat unless turned down and used as a fishing light while adrift or anchored. They may have limited use in docking. I agree with some of the primise of that article but overall I disagree with it. A spotlight is just that, a spotlight. It is not a...

    aluminum boat paint

Shawn, I think you are really over thinking this. Unless this is a "showboat" a oilbased enamel would be fine. The next step up is would be automotive acrylic enamel or a single stage urethane but there your looking at 100 plus bucks a gallon, then there's the base coat, clear urethanes that...

    sand blasting/wood for decking

I would be very careful blasting aliminum. Sand may be a little to coarse. Walnut hulls or some other soft media may be much better. Most here sand, wire brush or use scuffing pads. Exterior grade plywood can be good if you are careful with selection.

    UPS joins USPS???????????????

I will say this about the USPS. I am active in traditional black powder fire arms, like 18th century flintlocks. Being classified as a relic or non gun they can be shipped through the mail by individuals to most states. Many custom blackpowder gunmakers ship USPS only. It seems that a lot...

Hello, I'm Travis from north central Alabama. I've been lurking on this site the past few days and I have already learned a lot. Thanks. Three days ago I went to the scrapper-recycler and found a 14' Starcraft and a busted Sears canoe. I look forward to sharing and learning with y'all as...
