Broken latch strap on Minn Kota Edge

I managed to break the rope on my Minn Kota Edge today and couldn't fix it on the lake. Once I got home I took a look. The rope is attached to a latch bracket, and I can tie the rope to the latch bracket. The problem is that the latch bracket is then attached to a latch strap ( actually, it's...

    Torquing spark plugs

It's about time for me to check and/or replace the spark plugs on my 25-hp Yamaha. The owner's manual says to torque them to 18.4 ft-lbs but I don't have a torque wrench and hate to buy one for something I'll only do occasionally. I know the problems with cranking the spark plugs down too...

    Watts Bar Lake 8/11/11

No pics, just a report. I missed the entire month of May here in Tennessee which is when the carp and gar spawn. I wound up going out of town on back-to-back trips and didn't wet an arrow. Yesterday I went out on Watts Bar Lake and wound up with 15 gar, 5 buffalo, and one carp. None of them...

    Million dollar fender bender

Thank goodness my G3 1544 wasn't on the back of that white Mercedes she hit! https://autos.yahoo.com/news/million-dollar-fender-bender.html

    Thinning the herd

I don't know if it's a function of getting older, having worked in a morgue, or what but the more I read of this sort of thing the less sympathy I have for those who knowingly do things so incredibly stupid that they wind up getting themselves killed in the process. Warning signs were posted...

    TVA Lake Info for iPhone

For all you folks who use TVA lakes, there is a new TVA Lake Info app for the iPhone that gives lake levels, generation schedules, ramp locations and other nice things to know when you're on the water. You can read about it here...

    Bearing Buddy spindle kit

I'm getting ready to put Bearing Buddies on my trailer and the BB website mentions a spindle kit that supposedly helps keep the seals from being damaged. Does anybody out there have any thoughts on whether or not I need a spindle kit?

    Gear oil drain screw torque

When I change the lower unit oil on my motor the owner's manual says to torque the oil level plug and oil drain screw to 6.6 foot pounds. I don't have a torque wrench and don't have a clue what 6.6 foot pounds feels like. Of course I want to get it tight enough to keep water out but not so...

1.5-ounce football or round head jig molds

Does anyone know where I can find a 1.5-ounce football or round head jig mold? I've looked in all the usual places (Do-it, Barlow's, Cabelas, Bass Pro) and done an internet search but can only find them in the 1-ounce size.

Topping off the fuel tank or running it dry

Maybe this question has been asked before but if it has I can't find it. I have a 25-hp Yamaha 2-stroke that I use pretty much all year. It's one of the advantages of living in the sunny south. So far at least I've been able to find 100% gasoline so the following question isn't as critical...

First aid kit needed, none on board.

Yesterday I came to realize that there was one thing I need to have on board but didn't have--a first aid kit. Why, I don't know. I had one on my old boat but for some reason it had slipped my mind to have one on board my new boat. I remembered it yesterday. I was cutting my line when my right...

    The picture speaks for itself

Sometimes words just can't convey what the eyes see. My wife and I took a drive to Boone, NC yesterday and here's a picture I took of a house we passed.

    Inaccurate gas gauge

I use a 6.5-gallon plastic, portable gas can in my G3 1544 and until recently it has been reasonably accurate. A couple weeks ago, however, I noticed that it wasn't even close to showing what was really in the tank. When the can is full it now shows that it's about 1/3 full. I checked the...

    Navigation light placement

I'm trying to figure out how to put navigation lights on my G3-1544. On my old boat there was a large corner piece between the transom and the starboard side where I was able to mount the stern light base. On the G3, however, the corner piece isn't big enough to mount the base and for the life...

    Tail lights not working

I took my boat out today and noticed that the tail lights weren't working. The turn signals and brake lights on the trailer worked fine but not the tail lights. I did a search on this website and others and it seems like most of the time it's a problem with the ground. I haven't run a wire...

    Cades Cove Darwin Award Candidate

From time to time I see postings in the Watering Hole about dumb things some folks do, many of which makes them eligible for a potential Darwin Award. Having worked in a morgue for many years, I've long since ceased to be amazed at the last acts of stupidity that makes some of them eligible for...

    Barbecue to die for

Yesterday I was in Macon, Georgia giving a presentation at the Georgia Coroners Association annual meeting. One of the coroners is a real barbecue fanatic and has taken a casket and done some modifications to it. He's mounted in on a trailer and the inside of the casket is insulated and has...
