Bringing a 1970 Evinrude 18 back to life.

Just wanted to update, got everything back together and got this bad boy running yesterday. Compression and spark looked good so I cleaned the carb and finally got it running. One note is I had a bad habit of getting the spark plug wires crossed. But anyway it runs, and it started this morning...

OK good! I guess they figured if it aint broke! I managed to severe the connection between the starter rope and the flywheel. Not sure how but I have to get that reattached. Not sure how to do that either. Can anyone help?

That's strange. I have no idea about the history of this motor. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a case of bits and pieces. :?

I guess a better way of saying it is that the starter rope wont engage the flywheel. You can easily pull it and it retracts but there's no tension.

OK thanks. New problem, I was out there yanking on the starter rope and it just went slack on me, I turned the flywheel to coil it back up and it doesn't seem to be under tension anymore. Think I made things worse. Here's to being humbled repeatedly.

Hey guys I am trying to bring my motor back to life. Can't get it to start after it left me stranded on the res a couple weeks ago. Started out by cleaning the tank, fresh mix and fresh plugs. Pulled on the starter for about as long as I could take. Heard some popping at the end and after 30...

OK well. Cleaned the tank today and put new mix in, made sure that gas was getting to the carb. Everything seemed to be ok. Yanked on the starter until I couldn't yank anymore and nothing. At the end I was getting some loud pops and it started to smell like two stroke but nothing more then that.

Hah that is what the guy I got it from told me. Partly why I got it. I'm not proud of my lack of mech'savyness and figured I'd start here.

Ok thanks. I got fresh plugs the other day. Today I was planning on giving the tank a thorough cleaning and putting in some fresh mix. (50:1 I think for this motor?). Gas is getting to the motor, checked that the other day. I Noticed it was leaking from the hose but fixed that. Now the bulb...

Howdy everyone I just wanted to introduce myself, my name is Carl and I live in Northern California, I've been lurking on this board for a while and have been blown away with some of the projects I've seen. I just recently got my hands on a 14ft flat bottom v hull with an Evinrude 18hp...
