    Battery size, durability questions.

Trolling motor, lights use a deep cycle true marine battery. They are sometimes called AGM batteries. I had a WalMart dual purpose $70 battery for 5 years and it finally stopped taking a recharge this spring. It weighed a ton! I got a VMaxTank with plenty of power for a 30 lb troller to run...

Your most coveted piece of boating equipment

A reliable handgun for in the boat, at the ramp, on the road.... all places among strangers and all out where help or friends are NOT. You are on your own when boating and very few hairdressers or yoga instructors are on a lake in a boat... It's mostly guys who may be more reckless and rough...

What's some things you need to bring while going fishing?

Don't blow this off as overly cautious: airhorn or nickeled whistle to summon help cell phone charged up and Kleenex in a sealed zip bag! handgun Throw cushion and fire extinguisher if using an outboard engine I never had to summon help or put out a fire in 6 years of boating on rivers and...

where can I find aluminum angle that is affordable?

Most medium sized towns havce a steel supply company that generally has a section for aluminum. In Richmond, VA the big company for steel has an entire building for aluminum only (Richmond is a state capitol).

    wear your PFD!!!!!

My hot button! Get a lifejacket. I like the BassPro one made by Mustang that self inflates with a CO2 cartridge if you fall in the lake. Falling out of a boat in a lake is different from a river (which may be quiet or flowing fast and full of hidden debris). But once you are in the water, your...

    New member from Virginia

I bought a jon boat and trailer and had enough sense to forget about the boat when I saw is was fairly clean inside and apparently not leaky. The trailer bearings are what will get you killed! A traffic mishap when the bearings sieze up will make the boat cost pale in comparison! Look on...

    Choosing a boat...

Donmac is right.... wider is better and 16' jon boat is better than 12' or even 14'. For a single guy or 2 men, a 14' regular jon boat is OK and cheap to buy, especially along now in a tough economy! I run mine with a 2.5 Suzuki at about $600 brand new. Boat and Trailer were $1200, no leaks...

Bought 1st boat monday- second guessing decision

Small Claims Court is up to $5000 damages. Let their insurance pay for car and boat repairs promptly or take them to court. You have the photos and the proof. If you had older pics of the boat damaged area from when you first got it or by previous owner, it would help establish the tree service...

Retrieve a 14' jonboat ; extended trailer tongue

Here is how I solved it if others have a small car and a shallow ramp angle .... which means you need a longer trailer tongue and are willing to make an extension that collapses inside the main square trailer tube.... I added 5' of length for only at the launch and retrieve... not towing on the...

Retrieve a 14' jonboat ; extended trailer tongue

Apparently not many read the post I made: I do not want to wade in the water at all and the trailer extension is 5' and collapsable for towing. The car is a little Corolla and the ramp has a shallow ANGLE, so the 2 things make a problem getting deep enough to keep the tailpipe and rear wheel...

    Ultimate bunk boards..two thumbs up!

I have carpet covered bunks as well that are 2X4s , the wide side up. I believe you can get fairly cheap all plastic planks at Lowe's (1X3.75") in 8 and 10 foot lengths and then attach them into the existing bunk boards with flat head screws (counter sink the pre drilled holes a bit in the...

Retrieve a 14' jonboat ; extended trailer tongue

I cannot upload a pic, but here is the problem: At a shallow ramp w. pier to walk out on, and using a Corolla with a trailer behind and a 5' extension to the tongue, I can launch and retrieve without the tailpipe or rear wheels in the water. Good so far. At retrieve, the tongue extension is...
