Actually, it's been done that way for some vessels for quite awhile. It reduces stress on the hull when lauched "sideways" instead of stern first. Here's a shot of the Destroyer Escort (later re-classified as a Fast Frigate) that I was a part of the original commissioning crew (1973). Launching took place at Avondale Shipyards, Westwego, LA. in 1972. This ship is 438' long overall. I have an 8x10 photo of this exact photo hanging above my desk at work :)

Defintely, lol. Once the ship was turned-over to us (the Navy) from the shipyard people who sailed it to Mayport, FL., we hand-carried practically everything aboard, ie., tools, equipment, food, and even the mattresses for our bunks. The ship as delivered was basically an empty hulk.............except for the mess the shipyard workers left behind..............including empty beer cans :roll: .
