I've seen a whole host of different transom pads around, and even more boats with the outboard strapped to a GRP or aluminum transom without a pad. So, are there any rules to apply a transom pad?
My thinking is that these pads spread the load of the force of the motor across the area the pad touches, so the larger it is, the less potential damage will occur to the actual transom.
Also, many motors use those winged bolts with cups on and so folks strap them on, thinking the transom is man enough to handle the motor.
I'd appreciate any photos and thoughts you may have.
