We took a trip up to Cape Lookout this past week. We camped out on the beach in sight of the lighthouse, drove along the beach and the back road for the entire 25 mile length of the South Core Banks from Lookout Bight to Drum Inlet, climbed the light, and even kayaked across to Shackleford Banks to see the wild horses. The most amazing thing to me was seeing how clear-blue the water is in that area. Simply amazing! Now I understand why they call it the "Crystal Coast" For the water to be that clear here in SC, it has to be the middle of February, with about a week of no wind or rough conditions offshore.
