longshot » Thu Mar 20, 2014 4:36 pm[/url]"]Am I the only one getting pop up ads when looking at posts? I never saw them before the server issues
Me too.

Been getting the spam ads inbetween every other post. Real annoying but I understand you have to generate money.

Hi,
We are trying a few things to generate a little money for the site. The pop up ads are targeted banners and not really pop ups. You will see them only after the first post of a thread, and at the end of the thread. That is it! I am trying to figure out if there is a way they can only be displayed for guests and not the members. If we were on another type of forum software it would be possible.

The site costs me at a minimum $84 per month.

$34 for Hosting
$40 for monthly maintenance retainer
$10 for monthly prize and mailing.

If there is a big upgrade or a host move It adds $100's to the fee over a year, and every year it's something.

I purchased a bunch of shirts to sell because I wanted to upgrade the homepage and the forum. I took a bath with that because the person who was going to upgrade the forum took my $400 dollar deposit and disappeared. Lesson learned, but still hurts.

I totally do not want banners everywhere but Im trying to do this with little annoyance to all.

This is not a sob story, I love doing this. But Im not made of money. I work 7 days a week (I kid you not). 4 of those 7 days start at 1-2AM and I do not stop till 6:30 PM. I have a wife and 3 kids I need to take care of first.

So, if anyone has any ideas on how to generate a little more consistent income to make this the best site out there, please PM me details. :LOL2:

How many total member do you have? How many are active?
What other merchandise do you have/sell?
Have you thought about a voluntary membership donation? As in you can get a Tinboats.net member sticker for a $10 a year membership. Those members will have extra benefits and new members will be able to have a current rating and access to all parts of the site without any limitations. Also all donating members will have an active status to monthly drawings, even without 4 posts the month before. Just some ideas.

Also, there are several members who make things and could sell them here. Allow them to sell for an associate membership. This membership will cost the seller, whatever you decide.

I ordered some TinBoats 'swag' last year, and Id be up for the $10 donation fee with another sticker for my vehicle : ) This forum has been sooo helpful, but it goes beyod that.. It's like an online version of the Cheers! bar... people here share happy and sad moments, they pray for each other.. $10, totally worth it IMHO...

since I haven't won the monthly drawing in about 7 years I say do away with it!!!!!

I also say add a paypal donate tab I would give a few bucks to keep the site running

No big deal as long as they are supposed to be there. BTW, I have Chinese bride ads this morning.

In this case, I'm happy to see all my cousins and friends at Sweet Timber Frames, back home on Mount Desert Island.
They are artisans when it comes to building mortise and tenon Timber Frame homes.

The banners are targeted ads, meaning if you were looking at something closely related….they tailer the banners to you. So What were doing you looking at Chines brides? Mail order brides? :LOL2:

I have a cousin in Greece I could set you up with. She is from a mountain Village and does not speak a word of English.

Been there too as a harbor visit on ship, USS Halyburton FFG-40. Great time was had by all, especially as we did a nighttime in heavy fog trawler rescue the night before in heavy seas. The trawler floundered, Coasties couldn't drop a rig to the deck with the booms swinging so our RHIB went in and pulled them off. Locals piled us with free lobster when we left.
