After I joined the Navy at 18, my small destroyer went to New Orleans in 1968 to
enjoy Mardi Gras. Having never seen anyone party after 9:00 pm, I was totally aghast !! lol
My shipmates and I walked down an alley off of Bourban Street and into a small bar.
Some guy was playing the sax with a band, then some guy with a trumpet got up and did his part.
Looking around the room, there was a mix of party people and musicians. We had a very good time
listening to Boots Randolph, Herb Alpert and BB King in the SAME nightclub !!!! Of course, I had no
idea of who these cool cats were until someone told me. Another guy that was there was Al Hirt, but
we did not get to see him perform. Back then, Mardi Gras was AWESOME !!!!
all three of them made it a point to welcome the military to "their" show.
It was better than any USO show I ever attended.
We have lost many of the "Old School" masters, and BB King was at the top of the ladder, IMO.
very sad to hear of this.
