How old are your tires!?

We had an issue with that on the way to the NC coast this year. One of the Michelins on the back of the 2500 Suburban had a real slow leak (maybe 10 PSI a month, even towing heavy loads). Well, whatever internal issue there was finally let go in SC, so we put the spare on. It was the brand new spare that was factory installed on the truck when new. Of course, it was a 14 year old truck, and a Uniroyal POS tire. 200 miles down the road, it decided that it didn't want to hold onto its tread. Luckily, we were heading to the same island as a friend, and they were 30 minutes behind, so we waited for them, then they took dad and the tire 40 miles back to the nearest tire store, where they got a Michelin mounted and balanced, and then back to us. Oh, about 3 hours spent sitting under a bridge in the SC heat.

Once we got to the beach, we bought another Michelin, and put the existing one in (about half tread left) as the spare, knowing a) that it is much newer, and b) a much better quality tire.

Now, since the old truck is just the family beater truck, that gets used for in town runs, it would get the old rubber off the suburban, so the set on it is about to the point of seeing the air inside. Needless to say, a new set of Toyo's is in its future, as I will be driving that come March.
