We had a tragic accident here over the weekend involving 4 young men from area high schools on a duck hunting trip. Only one of them was rescued.

I light of the tragic accident and a general lack of preparedness for dealing with cold weather water accidents, a concerned parent composed this manual and is circulating it throughout the schools and the community.

I would suggest that anyone that participates in any sort of activities in water below 70* read through this.

Sorry to hear about this tragic accicent, how big was the boat they were in?, not that it makes a difference, just wondering. I'll say a little prayer for the families and friends. :(

thats a good manual... we used to do cold water jumps and I don't care how much clothing or WetSkin you are wearing.. you tire out fast (basically all of life is sucked out of you when you hit water - cold and hysteria do not mix).. if you do fall over, don't panic, just moderately (NOT FAST, you'll wear yourself out and get no where) paddle to shore... doggie paddling is actually a good technique because you don't bring your limbs out of water hitting cold air - treading water while moving forward is best in my opinion and experience

They were in a 16' jon boat. We had a severe cold front come through and these young men were unfortunately trying to move across a really treacherous area of the lake when it hit. The sole survivor is a friend of mine's son.

I hope your sons friend will be OK, I know this will stay with him for the rest of his life, again my prayers.

After I had been skydiving for a couple of years I had the misfortune of landing in a lake quite some distance from shore in the dead of winter. I was in a full jumpsuit, helmet, and had a front-mounted reserve (way back when). I had unbuckled the chest strap and as soon as I touched the water I released the leg straps, got out of the gear, and began to swim to shore. The cold water sucked the energy out of me almost immediately and the cotton jumpsuit and boots were weighing me down to the extent that I was virtually certain I wasn't going to make it.

Fortunately, the water got shallow faster than I thought it would and I made it out ok, albeit scared, half-frozen, and a lot wiser. Of the remaining 1,100 skydives, I never again jumped without water gear even when there wasn't anything larger than a mud puddle in the vicinity. The killing power of cold water coupled with heavy clothing is something that has stayed with me ever since.

Here is another video that could help all of us that fish the colder water
