Help with Starcraft model id

Post by water bouy » 29 Jun 2016, 22:49

This forum is terrific. I've been prowling for several weeks drooling at all the renovations so I looked around and came across a couple of boats. One is an old open bow 16 ft Starcraft someone started taking apart but the seller hasn't been able to give much info or decent pics. The other is more my kind of boat which I'll post a pic of if I can. It appears to be circa 1980 judging from the evinrude decal. I looked over the list of brochures but can't pinpoint the exact model and some of the specs are too small for my old eyes to see. A pic:

Google narrowed it down to likely a '79 Seafarer. Wonder if anyone has one like it. I'm curious how wide it is. I can't seem to ask questions on the site with the brochures. If I bring it home it will be the third and final boat I owned over the years, all tin v-hulls. First was an old 14 ft Lone Star with a 15 evinrude, then a '94 Lowe 16 ft with a 50 evinrude.

Here's a pic of the open bow I mentioned:

The Starcraft website has links to PDFs of all of the old catalogs. Their Customer Support Reps are also very helpful, though I do not have their number handy. One guy was Andy and he gave me detailsmto put in an entire new transom.

Thanks very much. I was able to lighten a pic of the other one to see the transom. I have no idea if it had a splash well or what kind of motor might have been there originally. Thinking I need a big a tiller model on standby in the garage.

Looks like it was a I/O of some kind.
It has been hacked up in so many ways. I'd have to say to take a pass on it.

I think you're right. My mind still thinks my body can do all the things it used to do.

Here's one as old as me, a '54 Montgomery Ward 16 ft. The seller says it was made by Master Craft but I can't find much info and I can't post over on iboats for some reason even though I managed to create an account. The motor is a 15 hp. Wonder if they made them sturdy back then. I don't see any rivets.

Without mic'ing the hull, I'd venture to say that is a STURDY hull: corregated floor, sides, and nine wall and floor straps. It was designed to stay in shape.

Hard to tell without touching the boat for me. Others know much more.\

Best Wishes.

That was my first impression, all the braces. It looks similar to a 1960-something Lone Star I've been eyeballing. I'd run over and check it out but it's an hour away. He said he's the second owner.

I would all over that one.

An hour drive is nothing for the right boat

heck I drive almost an hour one way to work everyday...

I called him and sure nuff, no rivets. The motor is a mid '70s Monty Ward and his asking price is worth the boat alone. Dern it. Who made welded boat back then. I went through iboat manufacturers brochures but saw nothing quite like it anywhere. With enough time and money I would open the middle bench and make storage on each side with styrofoam under a new floor and a front deck about as high as the benches and a 30hp. The thing is, people on craigslist are having to give away much newer boats already put together at the factory.

Today I came home with all the boat we need for lakes around here, a wide 14 1/2. If I hang onto it it'll get a carpeted floor and a front deck and a used 25hp if I can find one. The benches seem a little high to lay a deck on top of. The Tracker layout would be ideal if I can figure out how to do it. On second look, the Tracker decks are about as high. At least an aisle in the middle bench would be nice.
