I have a beat up old jon boat that was given to me as a gift. After multiple attempt to stop the leaking, I have begun the painstaking process of sanding and re-reviting the boat. The problem is there is more tar than tin on this boat! The tin is still good but whoever put the tar on, however long ago, was not shy with it. Anyone have any tips for removing tar? (other than getting rid of the boat. lol)

:WELCOME:

Use a heat gun and a metal 3 inch putty knife.Keep a can of WD40 or a small bowl of motor handy. When the tar starts to soften from the heat, dip the putty knife in oil or spray with WD40,and scrap slowly at about a 30* angle. The oil or WD40 will keep the tar from sticking to the putty knife. Please dispose of the old tar appropriately.

diesel will also soften it up if you don't have a heat gun. Carefull with the fumes.
