Hello
I just acquired a 14ft Crestliner Super seaman, Its in an okay shape for its age but can use some modifications and perhaps a new paint job.
I will be using it mostly around small lakes around Minneapolis and I want my 10 and 11 year old boys to be able to drive it around. I'm wondering what is a safe HP motor I can use without having to worry about the kids not being able to control it.
I had it out the other day with an old 4HP Evinrude direct drive but it was too small for it. The boat is rated for 24HP.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

hi
Do you think the 9.9HP would be able to get it to plane?

The spec says it weighs only 190lbs which is pretty darn light.
I think a 9.9hp should plane it depending on the load and balance. Also, I think it would about as much motor I would let a kid have.
I see a lot of 14 footers with 9.9s on the back.

Btw, I'm in the twin cities too, just south of the metro.
Enjoy your new toy. Be sure to post some pics.

I am from the Twin Cities too and do a lot of fishing on the small lakes in the Victoria area along Hwy 5. Being so close to Minnetonka keeps most of the big boats away - the smaller lakes to the west and south of Victoria are pretty quiet for the most part. The public accesses are variable but for a 14footer there should be no problem getting in and out. Lots of good places to teach kids about running the boat...

WHen I ran a 9.9 on my 1440 mv jon (weighs right at 200), it planed off ok, not fast, about 15-18 mph depending on load. With a semi-v, you should get al ittle better performance.

Thanks you guys, this is helpful information, I guess 9.9HP would be the way to go, after all I'm mostly going to be on small lakes.

Boberboy: sounds like you mostly fish around Victoria. My kids love to catch panfish, what lake would you recommend me to go for some action. Thanks
