My old 14' V has rotted wooden gunnels. When I get goin on this in the Spring I've got a few options to consider.

I can either replace with new wood, properly sealed and mounted with bolts. Probably end up with about 1" width on top.

OR

I'd be interested in purchasing some aluminum tubing 3/8" maybe up to 1/2" (gets expensive quick), cutting along the length, fit it over the lip, and weld.

What do you all think? I like the look of wood, but can't argue with the strength of metal!

Also, has anyone else done this? I've read through most of the Mod/Conversions... but most people don't have to worry about it.

Thanks!

I vote aluminum, but I could be a bit biased. I probably would go with a larger diameter than 3/8 tubing though. I would rather have a thin walled 1 inch or bigger tube than what you mention, for stiffness reasons. There is a significant amount of boat strength in your gunwales.
