I need some advice about pricing. I have found a 2000 Alumacraft all welded 1546 Waterfowler with EZ Loader trailer that I was prepared to buy but the dealer won't deal. The boat is 10 years old and has no dents or dings. The paint is worn and there area few holes drilled in the gunwales for a blind attachment but otherwise it is pretty good. It has nav lights, interior lights already wired and a third switch for a bilge. The dealer will sell to me (including a needed spare for the trailer) for $2100 cash. The dealer told me that a 25hp 4-stroke is too heavy and instead recommended a 20hp. I would rather get a 25hp 2-stroke. He has found a Yamaha w/electric start for $3850. I can get the same motor through Ed's Marine Superstore https://www.edsmarinesuperstore.com/yamaha.htm for $2800 + shipping. I have never ordered anything so expensive over the internet and never dealt with Ed's before. There is something to be said for buying local - if for no other reason than having someone's face to get into if things go wrong - but is it worth $1000? That's a lot of dough for the privilege of going toe-to-toe if I needed to. I would really appreciate some input about both the boat and motor question. The boat really is nice but still seems a bit high for a 10 year-old boat and trailer. I was a little surprised the dealer would be so rigid about the price. Weigh in please...

I emailed Ed's and they say Yamaha does not permit shipping motors to other locations. I cannot drive to VA to save $ on the motor. Also, and more importantly, Ed's has some pretty bad reviews on the internet. Lots of complaints to the BBB - sounds like it could be a bad deal in the end. I liked the dealer I spoke about the boat with but he seemed unwilling to deal. I am still looking...

If it were me, I'd keep looking. Craigslist and Ebay are good to watch. I found a super deal on my 1436 locally, $250.00 and the thing looks brand new. You might wanna take a look around locally, I've found the best deals by driving around and seeing what folks have for sale on the side of the road. Generally you'll find a better deal.

Motor prices you an somewhat shop on the internet.

Boat prices are all over the map, depending on where you live and how close you are to a major waterway with a deep pool of new and used boats to choose from.

Used boats are a lot cheaper here than what a lot of guys on this site are able to find but there are boats of one sort or another sitting in the majority of the yards and driveways around here, too.

Avoid the dealer unless you're going Brand Spanking New...

Hit up the online sites (boattrader.com, boats.com, iboats.com, ebay, craigslist, etc). Also, don't forget to check your local paper, a lot of older men and women avoid the internet and stick to the roots of classified ads.

Bobberboy,
FYI. Not sure if you're looking for a 4 stroke outboard, but you can find some better deals locally. See links.

The dealer of the 1546 Waterfowler I was looking at is asking about 65% of the new price for an equivalent boat and trailer. That' too much for a 10 year old outfit. That one has a 15" transom. I have found a Tracker 1448 that has a 20" transom. I was ready to get serious about the motor but now am not certain of the boat I will end up with. I saw both motors this morning but will have to wait now until I get some pricing of a few boats I have asked about. Thanks...
