What is the max horsepower rating for a 14' deep V, typically? Huntinfool and I were discussing this and we both thought it would be more then a 14' flatbottom, which is typically 25hp. We thought the deep V would be able to handle more hp, but we're really not sure. So that brings me here to the braintrust of tinboats. :) Thanks for the help! -Kris-

Lets do a comparison with my chart and figure it out!
* Note - Formula is from U.S. Coast Guard recommendations

Example: 14' Flat bottom, 48" transom width, tiller (hand) steering

14 x 4 = Factor of 56
56 x 0.5 - 15 = 13
Round to nearest multiple of 5 = 15
Max HP = 15

Example: 14' V-hull, 48" transom width, tiller (hand) steering

14 x 4 = Factor of 56
56 x 0.8 - 25 = 19.8
Round to nearest multiple of 5 = 20
Max HP = 20

This is a general measurement formula taken from Coast Guard Regs. With new technology and building strategies, a newer boat will generally have a higher max hp rating due to thicker transoms, longer beam widths, etc.

For our purpose, my math should be a tie-breaker

My 98' Lowe 1467V has a max HP rating of 25HP. I have seen the new ones that allow higher if using a console and wheel instead of tiller.
