Is anyone using padding under their carpet or just straight carpet over wood?

Most I've seen don't use a pad, but I've seen some people on other sites use an anti-fatigue mat under the carpet on front decks with pedestal seats. Apparently, it makes quite a difference after a long day of fishing.
I haven't yet but i'm getting ready to re-carpet a boat and i'm seriously considering it. I just don't want it to hold water like a sponge if some water happens to get under the carpet. Is there special padding for this?
Carpet with padding underneath won't wear out as fast which is a big plus.
