What is the best way to attach a seat base to the bench seat in my jon? I was thinking that self tapping screws would not be strong enough. What about toggle bolts?

I'd go with the screws first. If/when they come loose and won't tighten down cuz the threads are stripped, you could always go to a bolt and nut combo.

I used the toggle bolts. Im 220 and my usual fishing partner is 250. My seats dont budge.
I took 3/4 in ply and layed that on top of the bench seats, then ran the toggle bolt through both wood and the factory bench seat.
I did try the SS self tapping screws and they did not hold. I think the aluminum on my Tracker 1436 is thinner than the older other Jon boat brands.
