I recently picked up a 1981 Lowe Big Jon and I am trying to make a determination before I start my project. I am hoping that the experts can help me out. Looking at this site for a while and I know you guys are the pros. The coast guard plate is warn on the boat and I am trying to see what the boat is rated for on HP. New 2010 hulls are rated fro 25hp. I contacted Lowe but they were not much help. My Transom has been built up to a 20" and I know that 4 Strokes were not an option in 1981. Does anyone have this or close year hull or somthing similiar? How about 4 stroke on an older hull? I am concerned about the weight etc. My boat had a 9.9 on it but looking to get a 4 stroke... 15 or 20 hp. I will post pics of the project once I am able to re-power.

According to that, you'll be fine. A 20 horse, 4 stroke pull start without power tilt/trim weighs about 120 lbs. A 40 hp 2-stroke w/electric satrt is 210ish. I'd reinforce the transom and throw a 20 on it, then if it sat too low weld a set of flotation pods on it. That boat sounds like a beast.
