Well I went and picked up my first jon boat today. It's a 1977 Eldocraft 1542. Came with a "homemade" trailer, fish finder, bilege pump with switch, lights already wired, battery, 3 seats, trolling motor and side console with steering wheel and cables, all for $530. I want to repaint the boat at the moment then build front and rear decks. What is the best way to strip off the old paint? Is it ok to use spray can etching primer them roll on the paint I plan on using Parkers duck boat paint (hunter green) for the paint and aluminum angle for the bracing on the deck.

I like Aircraft stripper with #3 steel wool to remove paint. Pick it up at your local auto store for around $30. Cover with plastic and let it eat the paint away

i will also be removing some things like the rod locker. It was riveted to the hull, so I guess I will be drilling them out, leaving holes that are thankfully above the water line. I would like to just patch these holes and sand them smooth before painting. What would be good to patch them with that wouldn't react with the etching primer?

My tip for spraying with a spray can is get a trigger mechanism from Wal-Mart or Ace Hardware it snaps on the can and you pull the trigger on it more like a spray gun. Makes spraying with a spray can much easier on the hands. It costs about $2.00. When spraying you should try to overlap your pattern by about 50%.
