Measuring trolling motor shaft length.

I did a search, and found a few things for the jon boats.....

My question is how would one measure how long a trollign motor shaft need to be? The one trolling motor I replaced I went a little longer than stock and it worked fine. But I had something to work with (the stock motor shaft length)

If starting with No other boat or motor to use as a reference how would one know what length trolling motor shaft to use.
I have a 48" shaft M/K P/D and am curious if it would work on an older Starcraft SS 16.

The reason I asked is because I've fished with my brother several times, and it's obvious his trolling motor is too short....That and I already have a trolling motor so I was curious if it would work for the types of boats I'm looking at.

I know what you mean. My old boat was fine if someone was sitting in front.
