yep... I think the rule of thumb is to have the center of your prop 12-18" below the surface of the water... atleast that's where I get the best performance
 
Yup.
My trolling motor shaft is to long most of the time also.
The only real trouble for me though is hitting it when casting,the odd birdnest or broken,missing lure will make you take notice for awhile though.
I'm to lazy to cut it down,plus if it's real windy it helps to be able to get it to the water constantly.
