rubber back outdoor carpet also gives that extra barrier,along with glue.

I unknowingly didn't seal my wood, but I did use rubber backed outdoor carpet, and have had my boat out in the elements for over a year with no issues. When storing my boat I make sure it is cranked up as high as it goes in the front and the plug is out

Use fiberglass resin to coat the wood good to seal it and it wont

I painted mine with enamel paint. I figured if its good enough to last on the outside of the house it ought to last protected by the carpet.
