seat clamps on benches with lips?

Do those adjustable seat clamps work on benches that have a lip?
My benches have about a one inch lip on either side.
I was thinking that I could possibly set a few 2x4's or even 3/4 plywood against the bench so that the clamps would have a solid surface to affix to.

yep, mine are clamped to the lip.

edit: I added a 2x4 and an extra block of wood to hold them down.

I NEVER HAD ANY LUCK WITH THEM WITHOUT PUTTING SOMETHING TO MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE BUT MAYBE I DID SOMETHING WRONG

My boat has those lips. What I did was to place pieces of wood under the lip front and back then a second piece of wood on top of the first even with the top of the bench. Then I put a piece of wood over the bench connecting the the front and rear pieces. I added one more piece of wood on top of it, this is where I mounted the swivel. The whole thing will slide side to side on the bench.
I will get some pictures when it stops raining.

Does anyone prefer the standard swivels that bolt into your bench??

Removable seats work better in a small boat. You can move or remove them to suit your needs.
But if you want to permanently install one or more these work good.
