Ok, I hope this question doesn't sound too dumb.. I just built a boat, and it didn't have the tag on the back so I didn't know what the weight capacity was. Its a 1969 14'; starcraft v hull. I was wondering if by filling the bottom of it under the floors if it would make it float better? I haven't had the boat in the water yet, as I am just finishing up with the final bits and pieces on it. I am just nervous that it may sit too low with everything I put in it... But cant figure out if adding foam inside the boat would have any effect on its performance with it being in the boat rather than floating in the water by itself?

foam would only help a swamped/capsized boat stay up. and until needed it just more weight. do you have a bilge pump?

Both of the above statements are true.

The only reason anyone should ever build their boat without floatation is if they really hate it and don't mind if it sinks to the bottom during a mishap.

What's going to happen the first time you forget to put the plug in before you launch? If a rivet pops? If you get caught in a storm?

I strongly suggest you take your decking back up and install as much floatation as you can.

Bob,

I agree with what others have said.

There are many Starcrafts out there. If you post a picture, I am sure there will be a Tinboat member that could ID it, and probably provide the original capacity and max hp data. I know I could help, if it happens to be a 14' mariner v. ;)

Heres the link to the boat I'm working on, I know its a 69 starcraft, but thats all I know about it....

It looks real good Bob, and I see lots of room for floatation foam.

You could've saved your self a few lbs. by framing that up out of aluminum angle instead, but people don't want to say things like that after someone has already started doing something different.

Did you lay the carpet down over the screws or screws through the carpet to attach the decking? It's better to screw through the carpet in case you ever have to remove the decking to work on something. My Tracker Deep V came that way from the factory.

The pink or blue polystyrene sheet foam they sell at Home Depot and Lowes will do a good job for floatation and won't absorb water.

Hope this helps.

It is not a mariner v.

Couldn't find '69 brochures, but here are 1970: https://www.flickr.com/photos/starcraftbrochures/sets/72157622503170504/

Probably a Seafarer, Sea Scamp, or Super Star

We just put her in the water and it floats like a dream!! I figured it would just be too heavy but its nice!!

yeah, I screwed it down then carpeted it. It sat below the waterline on the boat when we put it in the river to test the level, and balance. We didn't get into it due to there are no docks there, and I didn't wanna scratch up the new paint too badly climbing in. Its only gonna sit 2 people. I think it will level out even better when I get the batteries, gas and gear into it!
