Hello Everyone,
Just looking for some advice for the first time boater (me) on what to pack on the boat as for necessity items.
Thanks in advance for ANY input.

How long is the boat? There are different items required if the boat is 16' rather than 12' or 14'.

  • Fishing tackle
    Fishing poles
    First Aid kit
Fire extinguisher (if you have a gas motor)
    Whistle (in case of emergency)
    Life Vest/Jacket(s)
    Cooler w/ drinks/snacks
    Paddle
    Sunscreen

I always like to take a hand towel too for wiping fishy hands on.

I'm sure I missed something, but someone else will chime in soon, I'm sure.

you might want to make a small tool kit with an assortement of small wrenches, screwdrivers and maybe some duct tape. Needle nose pliers are always good to have on board and maybe think about bringin along in a water tite container a roll of Toilet paper.

i carry.
tp,toolkit,spare spark plugs,jb weld marine,cotter key,extra wire,firstaide kit,batteries for nav lights navlights, 2 headlamps.

i have fillet knives mounted beside the front bench and my bench very handy.

Fire extinguisher even for trolling motor only boats. And a manual bilge pump

Duct tape
Extra plugs
Tools
rope
Lots and lots of jigs (you can eat them in case of emergency)

Monster
Rockstar

and some other stuff but after a few Monsters and Rockstar it is all a blur

Think of every stupid or really dumb thing that can happen and have a plan for it. Just thinking ahead saved me more than once...

Oh yeah, an anchor and enough line tend to come in handy...

Thanks Everyone, there are plenty of things I hadn't thought of there. Keep 'em coming, I need all the help I can get!
By the way, our boat is a 1981 Starcraft 14' Seafarer with a 1974 Mercury 110 9.8hp. The boys, (especially Caleb) are very excited to get her out on the water. He wants me to run the motor in the driveway every day I have off of work! He's 8, I can't fault him for that. He helped me run new trailer wires the other afternoon and would stop until we hooked them up to the truck. I love it!!!
Thanks again Everyone

Does your State have certain requirments that your supposed to carry?
Up here theres alot of things that we "have"to carry.
Life jacket or PFD for each person on board
Buoyant heaving line 15 metres(50')
Reboarding device / ladder (if boat height above 20"s,I think)
Manual propelling device OR anchor with 15 m (50') of rode
Hand-bailer OR manual pump
If equipped with motor: Watertight flashlight OR 3 Type A, B, or C flares
Sound signalling device(whistle/air horn)
Navigation lights [Not required unless operated at night or in restricted visibility.]
Magnetic compass [not required within sight of navigation marks]
Radar reflector [not required under most day and near-shore use]
Class 5BC fire extinguisher if equipped with inboard engine, fuel tank, fuel-burning stove, fridge or heater.
Sounds like alot but theres "kits"for sale up here and all the stuff fits into a bailer.
Heres one type:

If you have a 12vdc powered accessory that uses fuses, spares come in handy or an automatic reset type fuse.

Don't forget the common sense.
