This is my build thread. Got a good deal on a 1972 Johnson 25 hp to put on my boat. Boat is 14' long and 4' wide, using that formula I "should" be ok. Plan on really beefing up transom anyway with either double layer 3/4" plywood or 2X10's.

Also want to add two more knee braces, but not sure how to build those.

Thanks in advance.

Double layer of 3/4 ply is a lot stronger than a 2x10.

Remove you current knee brace and install the plywood, then reinstall your knee brace bolting through the ply and transom metal and rerivet it to the bottom of the boat.

I would think that motor is fine for that boat. The 14X4s new are rated for 25 so you should be fine especially if you add more support for the transom.

You should be fine like everyone else said especially if you are re-doing the transom. The bigger motor will come in handy with the extra weight of the plywood decking and should push you along nicely. Take it slow at first until you see how the boat reacts with the big motor and then if you feel safe hit the wide open throttle!

Also remember that older o/b motors were rated differently than present day motors. New rated motors are more somewhat powerful than older, pre 1980's, motors.
