Just bought a 16' smokercraft pro alaskan! It has a few small holes near the bilge from water being trapped in it that I've repaired. It has a single 500gph pump from factory. Id like to add an extra pump and just connect into the drain of the stock pump. Boat is already wired for it with a switch.
First question is will water back flow out of the second pump if I only have one running?
Second is if I ran both pumps at the same time would there be any benefit since the hose diameter isn't changing?
I'm not able to add another thru hull fitting unless it runs out the transom because of the way the boat is set up.
Another thought is just wire up the second pump with a length of coiled up hose that I can throw overboard if the need for the second pump arrives(I hope to never have to use either, but I want to be prepared!).
Thanks for your help, now heres a few pictures, because we all like tinboat porn!

I like the boat...Congrats!

I wired up a bilge with a length of wire and battery clips so I could use it as both the bilge and use it for a livewell in a cooler (fill/drain/and airate)

You could do that and store it in a hold and only get it out when you need it...and hopefully you never need it.

I agree. Go for the two pump (one held as an emergency) rather than the "flow through" you first described.

As far as extending the second pump's hose over the gunnel...that is how MANY boats are set up permanently.

I'd set yours up the same way and only use the second pump when necessary. When you NEED it, you will be very happy to have it. Please don't ask how I know this.

Ha ha
regards, R

p.s. fasten the second hose down permanently. If you just "throw the hose over the side" it may well just flip back into the boat when pressure is applied. At the very least, try it out now.
