Good Morning all, I'm a regular lurker here, nice work on all your builds. I have this family heirloom. Many days spent and memories built with my father on Long Island Sound. Now I pulled it out of the weeds, it's solid, no leaks. My kids and I are rebuilding it for some freshwater fishing, for 2013... It's an early 70's Chrysler Skipper, 16ft. Its a real stable boat, and use to go like a bandit (it seemed) when we had the 18hp Sea Horse on it.
I am planning the basics, already rebuilt the transom, replace the bench tops, add some seats, floors, and whatever else we can tinker with, (great having Cabelas 3 mi away). We intend for this to be our fishing boat. I promised the wife a fun family boat next summer.

I'm struggling with the bow cover, right now its aluminum, needs to be replaced, and takes up a couple feet of space. I would like to make it smaller, out of wood, and maybe build an area for a pedestal seat up front. Anyone have any pros, cons, experience with this, or ideas? Thanks.

Andy

Pro's would be more room. Con's, more flexibility up front which could lead to lose rivets down below, and more water in the boat when out in the chop. You could always go to a paint less dent removal specialist and he could straighten it out for you. Might be a bit unstable with a bow seat considering it's a narrow V. Main consideration would be the support it provides to the front of the boat. If you at least left your brace intact up front or only removed part of the cover the rigidity would remain, but that can only be determined in person.

We are going to need pics of the restore.. Lots. & Congrats on working to get the family boat up and running!

Thanks for the input sixgun86. We are going to remove the existing piece of aluminum, and replace it with a piece of 1/2" ply cut in a U shape within the existing flange. I'll have to see how it feels after.
Small .... low.... deck in front of the first bench with a 8" pedestal.
We'll get some progress and pics done after my vaca next week. Been too hot around here anyways.
Thanks,
