I am thinking of putting in a fold-down bench in the rear of my 1542 and wanted to get some insight on how this may interfere with steering. I really want to use the bench instead of a seat, so that two people can sit back there if necessary and because i like to move around. I have measured and there would be clearance for the motor handle but has anyone had this set up and hated it?

I am thinking of ordering something like this: https://www.overtons.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?pdesc=Wise-Camo-48-Folding-Bench-Seats&i=92527

Any advice would really be appreciated.

Thanks

Most boat/motor setups that I've been in or around had the rear bench set back far enough so that the seat has to be mounted off to one side or the tiller handle will hit the seat, preventing you from being able to turn in one direction. Unless you figure out some way of mounting the folding bench a little more forward than normal, I think you'll have trouble steering. And even if you do manage to get past that issue, reaching over and down behind the seat back to hold the tiller will make it uncomfortable to steer the boat. And I think the longer you have to keep your arm in that position the worse it will get.

If you want to be able to move around, look in to getting something like the sliderg5. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msD2EDNTjVg

Sorry to bring up an old post but if someone wanted to do a bench seat in the back why not do something like this: https://tempress.com/#!/~/product/category=442155&id=2536267
You still might run into some tiller handle clearance issues but it would give you more access to the fuel tank and anything else that might be behind there. It would be a lot nicer if the seats folded down and not just the center console....oh ya and if it weren't $500!
