O.K. I am proceeding to the decking part of my build and worry about the hatches being flush with the floor. I am using carpet (20 oz.) and want to be able to walk on these hatches so I will frame the bottom side of the deck with support wood. Should I wrap the deck carpet around the opening then attach the support sandwiching the carpet? The lid will be wrapped the same way. I worry about this stuff...could somebody help me with this? I have seen some builds where the lids are clearly higher than the deck and I want to avoid that.

Just make the hole deeper then the hatch lid, accommodate for the thickness of the carpet. You can always take scrap and build a small mockup piece to make sure it will come out the way you want it.
