14 foot duroboat, johnson 1972 20 hp with 25 carb, she weighs 180 dry. i dont know how fast at wot, but pretty fast. maybe 26??

my question is this:
why is the tinny so less stable than a glass boat? is it due to the nature of the tiller steering? i had thought i could get the boat up to 30+, but at wot it is quite the unstable uncomfortable feeling. seems like if i wot, the slightest movement on the tiller could send me flying out the side.... :LOL2: is it me? or do i need to try and move the tilt pin to the last notch? at wot she gets a little squirrley, like the bow is plowing a bit. i have ptt on the bayliner so i can trim to the perfect tilt.
do any of you have the same issue on the tiller? i dont like putting fins on the motor but will if some of you have had good results.

any tips? this is the first tinny with a motor larger than a 15. always wanted to go a little faster than just planing. now the tinny will plane in seconds, with power to spare. im not sure if i want to go to a larger pitch on the 20, like the torque :D

Hi dkonrai. Tinnies aren't any more, or less stable than glassers per se. All boat handling comes down to hull design, weight distribution and power. Flat bottom hulls tend to slide around and slap the water, but do allow you to get into shallower water, whereas v-hull boats have a deeper draft, but more stability. Most boats try to get a mix of each. The so-called semi v-hull design is very popular and incorporates a pointed bow which tappers to a flat bottom in the rear. I run a 1966 Johnson 20hp tiller drive outboard on my 1959 vintage 14' tinny and rides like its on rails. I can throw it into a hard turn at WOT and it won't blow out, or anything. I use a DIY tiller extension and grab bar to help redistribute the wight and improve my visibility. Both are very common down here in FL where folks like to run real fast in real shallow water. I haven't used a GPS yet, but I'm guessing I'm in the low to mid 20s mph. You're probably not going to get anywhere near 30 mph with a 20hp unless it's on a Gheenoe, or similar light weight hull. Here are some links to a couple vids I've made with my set up as well as a few dream rigs.
