It is my understanding that bare aluminum will corrode, but will then form a very tight layer of aluminum oxide which will protect against further corrosion. If you clean off the aluminum oxide, the aluminum will corrode a bit more but will then form another layer of protective aluminum oxide.
I was talking today at work about wanting to put a false floor on my boat. A guy said that saltwater would get trapped in the small gaps and cause corrosion. I have also seen on this forum about how some people are concerned about the same thing by putting a layer of foam between the hull and fase floor, trapping a film of water.
What is there about this that wil result in extra corrosion? Why wouldn't it just form a layer of aluminum oxide and then become passivated?
