My understanding is cam has a latch that rotates to lock the hatch closed, slam is a friction type closure that doesnt lock shut just holds hatch shut. I think :?
Cam latch requires you to twist the handle to open and close the hatch. Slam latch pulls up on the handle to open, no need to do anything but push (or slam) to close. Spring latch automatically locks the hatch shut.
