I have hydroturf with 3m backing coming from Gatortrax! I have pulled the old carpet up and as you can see from the pics there is plenty of old adhesive and carpet bits. The carpet and most of the adhesive comes off fairly easy with a sander. (That is my chosen method over chemicals, etc.)

My question is how hard should I work to get the old adhesive off? I am curious if that will give the new adhesive more to "bite" into versus bare aluminum. In the first two pics, you can see where I have started sanding.

thanks!

You're gonna want to get rid of as much of the old adhesive as you can, especially the stuff with the carpet backing stuck in it - peel and stick adhesives don't like high spots in the surface, so you'll end up with air pockets that don't stick. A wire wheel on an angle grinder will make pretty short work of it.

Before you put your new flooring in, give the whole thing a good wiping down with acetone or automotive wax/grease remover.

I installed my hydroturf with 3m super 90. Its held up good except for where gas tank sits. I think some gas got on it and realeased the glue. I had bare aluminum to start with but i wiped everything down with acetone before installing just to make sure it was well cleaned.

I will post better pics when I get home and get boat back together. It looks really good so far. I didn't plan to cover the sides....but I am now leaning that direction.
