I wanted to know how clean does surface need to be before I carpet. I am using spray contact cement. I used a wire cup brush and sander. The surfaces are smooth but still have traces of old glue. I noticed some stripping down to shiny metal. Is that necessary?

Here is the glue I am using. It was recommended by the carpet supplier and a installer that does boat carpet and vinyl. I also attached a picture of a hatch...not sure if further prep is necessary. Thoughts?

To answer your question - - - no, you do not have to remove every spec
of old adhesive. Just get the loose stuff off, and follow the directions on
the can of adhesive you decide to use.
Personally, I find that the exterior/outside grade of carpet glue is the easiest to use vs the aerosol type.
Put it on with a trowel with 1/8" notches like you would do on a house floor.
or, for a small area, take a piece of plastic or stiff cardboard and cut some
notches in it with a knife or scissors and spread it out as per instructions on the container.
The Weldwood contact adhesive that you show will work just fine when applied properly. (follow the directions on the can)

don't over think it !! you are doing a BOAT - not your living room.
