I am about to mount a Tohatsu 18 4stroke on the back of my newer topper 15. That tohatsu is fairly heavy and made me nervous watching it bounce around on my last boat.

Should I mount an additional piece of plywood to the outside of the transom to strengthen it up or is the factory design strong enough to last?

I believe i am going to leave the motor in the down position and cut a piece of wood to brace the bottom of the motor when trailering. They should stop a lot of the bouncing off the motor. Thoughts?

They make a rubber transom pad or use wood as you said. It's not really for strength but to keep the motor from making marks on your boat.
I like transom savers even for small motors.

I've got an extra sheet of plywood on the outside of mine and a steel plate in the inside from when my dad had a 20 horse on it. Seemed to do ok.

But my boat is pretty old so idk. Yours may be fine ljke if is.
